How Green are Green Labels?

How Green are Green Labels

Biodegradable labels, how green and eco-friendly are their credentials?

If you are running a ‘green’ business you will want to be sure that the material you are using for your packaging and labels is safely and efficiently biodegradable. It will also be important for businesses to educate their customers on how to dispose of their packaging and labels. After all, terms like "biodegradable" are only meaningful if using them actually helps the environment. And that's becoming increasingly desirable for so many business owners today.

Breaking it down

Biodegredation is when substances are broken down by a biological process. This could involve bacteria, heat, oxygen, water and so on. We generally assume biodegradable materials will be easily broken down, and the final product should be something free of toxin that can be released back into the earth without harm. It is true that if a material is only biodegradable under certain conditions, it should be labelled accordingly.

Biodegradable or compostable?

For such a commonly used term, the word biodegradable can be confusing at best and misleading at worst. Biodegradable by definition means almost every substance: whether a material needs 6 months or 1000 years to break down, it is still technically considered to be biodegradable. Being derived by nature or chemically man-made does not change the definition. Another common misconception is that biodegradable means compostable. Not so, however compostable material is biodegradable, but there we digress...

Which biodegradable labels are right for you?

Certainly biodegradable labels and packaging will not suit every brand and product. At The Green Label Company we realise how important finding the right biodegradable labelling material can be for a brand.
