Mama’s Beeswax

At the GREEN LABEL company, we love shining a light on the amazing brands we work with - especially those making conscious choices for the planet. In this customer case study, we’re chatting with Helen Worwood, the driving force behind Mama’s Beeswax, a brand that’s dedicated to natural products, sustainable practices, and packaging that reflects their values. From biodegradable labels to thoughtful design, Mama’s Beeswax shows us how small businesses can make a big impact on their customers.

Tell us about Mama’s Beeswax -

what inspired it, what products do you offer, and what makes them truly stand out?

“I started keeping bees over 10 years ago and became aware that most beekeepers have a bucket of beeswax after the honey harvest that they "will get around to doing something with".  As I learned more about beekeeping, I became fascinated by beeswax and all its beneficial properties.  It was easy to decide that I would do something useful with this beautiful resource rather than let it go to waste. Do you know it takes bees twice as much energy to produce wax as Honey?

“I now make Beeswax food wraps and candles. A range of skin care items including soap, lip butter, body lotion bars, honey & salt exfoliators and shampoo bars.  Plus, I've refreshed some traditional recipes to offer furniture polish, dubbin and tack polish for home and hobby use.”

Why go green? What sparked your decision to use planet-friendly materials for your labels, and why was that important to you?

“During lockdown, I became increasingly concerned about the number of plastic bottles we were using, so I learned to make soap to enable my family to at least stop buying handwash and shower gel. I carried this through into the business - choosing to package in recyclable glass and aluminium containers wherever possible.

“For me, there simply wasn't an option to not be as green or eco-friendly as possible.  I struggled to find stickers that weren't vinyl - which is just another type of plastic right? A friend pointed me towards the GREEN LABEL company and choices for compostable and biodegradable labels made from planet-friendly materials.

“It is all part of my mantra to help people say buzz off to single-use plastic!”

Do you have any cool label features or standout label types—like tamper-proof seals or anything a bit special in your packaging?

I have a three-part honey jar label - lid, main label and tamper-proof seal. The hexagons on my shampoo bar and exfoliator bars also look a bit special.

What would you say to other sustainable brands looking for an eco-friendly label partner?

Just do it!   Customers often comment that my labels feel nice. As a solopreneur, I am very driven to keep costs down- so it is tempting to think that the best solution is a small quantity from the local "corner shop printer". I was pleasantly surprised that I could get a more cost-effective solution with relatively low minimum order quantities from the GREEN LABEL company. And the payback in recognition and customer appreciation of what I'm doing is huge, especially in younger audiences where I typically struggle to engage.

Do you have any exciting projects, product launches, or plans on the horizon you’d love to share?

I'm about to launch a hair conditioner bar to match the shampoo bars - so people can genuinely have a plastic-free shower and bathing experience. Also, I've done some more research on the beneficial properties of propolis and am looking to include some propolis items in my range - once the bees have collected enough for me to harvest!
