The Plastic Tax

The Plastic Tax

Plastic Free July and Plastic Tax

Can we end our love for plastic?

Plastic Free July is about reducing single use plastic waste. Considering that out of all the plastic produced only 9% has ever been recycled, isn’t it about time we changed our habits and started listening to consumers? New legislation could help, as a tax on plastic is being imposed in the UK. Read on to find out more about the benefits behind it.

How will plastic tax help?

A new “green tax” was introduced into the UK earlier this year in April 2022. The aim is to financially incentivise businesses to use recycled plastic which must contain at least 30% recycled material. The tax collected on non-recycled plastic material is expected to go towards tackling the problem of plastic waste going into landfill, and stimulate the development of recycling industries and technology. The technology is largely already out there but implementing it comes at a cost.

Recycled PP label material

Plastic labels are tough and so one of the benefits of a plastic label is being oil resistant and waterproof. At the GREEN LABEL company we have recently introduced a recycled PP label material called Fasson, so our customers have an eco-friendlier label option to standard vinyl labels. Made from 90+99% recycled material, Fasson offers good resistance to grease, moisture and UV. While the label is made from recycled plastic it is not suitable for recycling so doesn’t tick every box.

Compostable and biodegradable label materials

Plastic Free Labels

Over 80% of consumers would prefer their packaging to be compostable which begs the question - why is there so much plastic in the sea? Thankfully our labels are fully biodegradable or compostable, so that means they will return to the soil without leaving toxins. Consequently they cannot be recycled to make something else to use in the future. The terms biodegradable and recyclable are two very different concepts, and their meanings are sometimes misunderstood.
