Cockles and Heart Wellness Candles
Recently we have seen demand for biodegradable and compostable labels and stickers for gifts, health, and wellness products increase. So we thought the time was right to case study one of our biodegradable label customers in this market place.
As we place more emphasis on natural healing and holistic approaches, so consumers are increasingly seeking out natural products. There truly is a lot of synergy between sustainable labels and wellness products which Shona from Cockles and Heart has clearly identified. We love a happy ever after story and this is one of the nicest we have heard in a long time. It really warmed the cockles of our hearts… and so will the candles. In her own words, Shona told us about the origins of her brand - Cockles and Heart.
Herbs, goodness and artisan products
Cockles and Heart is a lockdown baby in that COVID really did radically change our direction. Up until this time last year we were primarily herb growers. The pandemic accelerated our plans to diversify into making artisan products using our herbs and botanicals, and now this is the biggest part of what we do. Thank goodness we made the change because even now many of the markets and fairs where we would have sold our herbs, still aren’t happening.
How did the name come about?
As to the name, we love candles and when we were bouncing ideas around, we kept on coming back to the lovely rosy glow you get from candles and how they warm the cockles of your heart. So Cockles and Heart was born. We wanted to have fun with it so we created three sub brands - Old Flames for our vintage china candles, Old Crocks for aged china with slight imperfections and Fab Flames for our wellness tin candles.
Ranges and products with our special USP
When we approached the GREEN LABEL company to get new biodegradable labels for our wellness tins earlier this year, we asked our customers what they thought, and the vast majority said move on from Fab Flames to names that describe the mood they create. So our brilliant designer at Leishman Design in Torquay came up with the new label concept and so far, people are loving them.
Up and Away and Breathe Deep are our grounding and uplifting blends and we’ve blended Starry Night and Lights Down Low to create a relaxing evening vibe. Our vintage china candle range Old Flames continues to be at the core of our business, and they are really popular at Christmas, Valentines and Mother’s Day. But the wellness tins are super popular year-round. We seem to have tapped into people’s desire, coming out of the pandemic, to be connected with nature and wellbeing in general.
The herbs and botanicals we use are our unique selling points as is our commitment to making the right choices for the environment.
Biodegradable labels are the right choice for the environment
Which brings me back to the labels. We actually searched across the UK to find a company that offered truly sustainable alternatives to eco disastrous options like vinyl. And in the end, we found the GREEN LABEL company right here on our South Devon doorstep.
We love what they do and they are really nice people too. Our labels are cane fibre, totally biodegradable and beautifully printed. They have lifted our wellness tin candles to a new level.
