Do We Do Recyclable Labels
At the GREEN LABEL company we specialise in biodegradable and compostable labels, and we sometimes get enquiries for recyclable labels too. Finding a suitable recyclable label is actually more of a challenge than you might imagine, if we fully understand what the recycling process involves for labels and the items they are applied to.
The complexity of recycling
In this blog we look at exactly what can and cannot be recycled, and why the different layers that make up a label actually result in them being a little complex in terms of recycling.
Paper
Paper is right up there on being one of the most recycled materials. A paper label on a paper box is a great recyclable combination as all paper items go straight into the same recycling stream. However a paper label on other non-paper items, such as glass for example, may present difficulties when it comes to recycling.
Different plastics
Quite often we demonise plastic but at the end of the day a lot of plastic can be recycled. Therefore, a polypropylene label on a polypropylene container is an option for recyclable labels with both items going into the same recycling stream.
PET (PolyEthylene Terephthalate)
In the same way a PET label placed onto a PET item is also recyclable. There are implications regarding the quality of the material and how this might push the resulting recycled product down the recycling chain.
HDPE (High-Density PolyEthylene)
HDPE labels and HDPE containers or items are good to recycle too.
Laminated labels
A polypropylene laminate applied to a polypropylene base material is OK to be recycled. However, if the laminate is applied to a paper label material, it cannot be recycled because the two materials need to be recycled in different streams.
Label release liner
This is normally silicon based and so not recyclable except in a special facility.
What about the ink and the glue?
The amount of ink or glue on a sticker or label is in too small quantities to collect and recycle. The other issue with glue specifically is that it changes over time.
How do biodegradable and compostable labels fit in?
While not classed as recyclable, biodegradable materials in small quantities should not cause harm entering the recycling streams. They are a more cost effective and natural option compared to the often expensive, recycled paper labels, which are usually bleached to make them white and used with an adhesive that can be toxic.
In conclusion
There is not always a simple answer to the question of recyclable labels.
Recycled and recyclable labels may not be the best option when it comes to making sustainable choices.
We need to pay attention to recyclable combinations of our label plus item/packaging.
We need to pair the materials to allow for the same recycling stream to do its job efficiently.
The limitations of a recycling facility must be investigated fully to get the recyclable seal of approval.
Mixing materials becomes impractical or inefficient because of the limitations on recycling facilities.
The different layers of labels can also add to the difficulty of recycling.
If recyclable labels are important to you, it is worth doing the research thoroughly in order to get it right and genuinely tick that box.
