Will Compostable Labels be Right for Me?

Will Compostable Labels be Right for Me?

Our business is eco-friendly labels, and we can help you choose the material that is right for your product and also fits your budget. We supply compostable labels to a range of industries, but are they good for everyone?

What does compostable mean?

Compostable means a material will break down over a short period of time, rather than years and decades. Compostable materials do not leach harmful chemicals when breaking down, so in this climate shouldn’t all businesses at least be looking at compostable label materials?

What is the difference between biodegradable labels and compostable labels?

While both are made from natural materials, compostable labels and stickers will start to degrade more quickly than their biodegradable counterparts. Expect a shelf life of about 6 months (or longer if stored in the right conditions) for compostable labels compared to up to 2 years for biodegradable labels.

Can compostable labels be recycled?

No they cannot be recycled, this means compostable labels can’t be used to make something else when you have finished with them. However, if they enter the recycling stream, they are unlikely to cause any major harm. The terms compostable and recyclable are very different.

What industries are they good for?

We currently supply labels made from compostable material to the fashion industry, beauty brands, wildlife trusts and food and beverage brands to name a few. Pretty much every sector can benefit from compostable labels and stickers. Natureflex compostable label material comes in white or transparent and produces stunning results. From car window stickers to labels for coffee pouches, compostable labels are kinder to the environment and that’s important. So, why not raise awareness and include “This Label is Compostable” actually on your stickers as well!

What are they not good for?

Compostable labels are not ideal for wet areas, for example products that would be used outside and exposed to rain or stored in a shower perhaps. But if you really wanted an eco-friendly label material for a wet area there are other options to be considered, possibly a recycled PP label material. There is always a solution, so it is worth having a conversation with us explaining how you intend your labels to be used. Besides which, we are always happy to send label samples for you to test.

And the legal stuff

As legislation evolves, the classification around eco-friendly materials may change, particularly from country to country. If using compostable label material is important to you then please get in touch to find out more and ask us for up to date compostable material specifications.
